Mystery Aircraft Spotted At Jean Nevada (0L7)

What the heck is this? I saw this obviously home-built flying machine at the airport in Jean Nevada. Yes, that's a VW engine up front. You couldn't pay me to fly this thing! I hope the owner doesn't kill himself in it.

It is obviously some type of ultra-light. It has no "N" number and no radio or electronic equipment of any kind in it. Jean NV is a class "G" airport so no communications is really necessary.

While landing at Jean (0L7) there were a couple of ultra-lights buzzing around the airport. It appeared that they were performing touch-n-go's. If you intend to visit Jean I would recommend that you watch out for the ultra-lights. They are hard to see and not all of them bring portable radios on board. Being in a standard small aircraft, my 80 knot landing speed is fast enough to create a problem in sharing the runway.

BUT, I would like to say that Jean is an excellent, well maintained airport. Plus, if you land there to gamble at either of the two near-by casinos all you have to do is pick up the courtesy shuttle phone (on the outside of the building on the south side) and let them know you're there. In less that 10 minutes you'll be on the floor dropping money on the slots. Both casino's have restaurants too. We ate at one of them (I forgot which) and the food good, and the best part is it was cheap! Anyway, enjoy.
